Beach Babe: Hayley Morrisette

I am thrilled to introduce you to this week's beautifully fit (on the inside and out!) Beach Babe, Hayley Morrisette. Hayley and I went to college together. I loved spending time with Hayley because this babe always had a smile on her face with a contagious zest for life. It's no wonder I asked her to be featured as a Beach Babe.

Originally from Huntington Beach, this certified nutritionist teaches yoga in LA at Core Power Yoga. She also teaches a class in the park that she calls Hay Moga. How cute is that?!

Her love for life is apparent in her photos. Get excited to read her answers to my questions... such great advice! I'm so excited for you to meet this total babe, Hayley.

Tell us a little about yourself. How did you get involved with fitness?
I have lived an active lifestyle as long as I can remember. Growing up I played soccer, softball, swimming, golfing, and did junior lifeguards in the summer. In high school I started to explore pilates and yoga. But it wasn’t until after college that I began to consistently practice yoga. Being able to share yoga with others and watch my students practice grow and their life transform, is truly an incredible experience.

How has yoga affected your life?
Yoga has taught me how to let go, to disconnect from the chaos, become present and appreciate the current moment. If you are always searching for more you will never be happy. It’s so important to have dreams and goals but without an appreciation for what we already have there’s really no point. There will always be more, better, higher desires… You can’t wait for something to happen to be happy. You have to choose to be happy now.

What would you say to someone who has never tried Yoga before?
No judgment, no expectations. Have an open mind, be patient, and try to not be competitive with your neighbor, your friend, or even yourself.

Healthy lifestyle tip:
I love to walk after dinner. Even if it’s only 5-10 minutes (maybe park a little further from the restaurant), I believe it speeds up your metabolism and digestion so you don’t go to bed on a full stomach.

I love to drink unsweetened cranberry juice (organic, cold pressed, not from concentrate,… Lakewood is great brand to use) to reduce sugar cravings, cleanse my liver, and reduce belly bloat. I will make a drink with 3 parts water:1 part cranberry and add a few drops of liquid stevia if I want it a little sweet.

Best tips ever! Favorite workout and typical workout schedule?
I love to practice different types of workouts. Yoga is like my foundation and I like to add weights, running, barre, and hiking in to always change things up. I feel the strongest when I am always changing my workout routine. I practice hot yoga about 5x/week, take Barry’s Bootcamp (weights and treadmill interval class) about 3x/week. And anything else I can fit in to keep active.

Go-to healthy snack or recipe?
I love drinking green juices, but I noticed they spike my blood sugar, and let’s be honest, they’re not very filling. I started blending the same ingredients I would juice – carrots, spinach, cucumber, ginger, and lemon with a small ripe frozen banana (natural sweetener, and the riper the banana the more alkaline it is). I can drink this as a meal and my body feels so good - such incredible vitamins and nutrients and easy to digest.

Motivation to stay in shape?
I am motivated to stay in shape by that feel good feeling that comes with being active; feeling good in your own skin (not to mention skinny jeans). I love the self-appreciation that you feel after a challenging workout.
